I activated my phone with a 780 area code but I found that by when I press "1" to check VM, the call is to a 1+403 area code. So does this mean I will be paying LD charges when I check my own VM?

Unlikely. The 403 number is also shared by Saskatchewan & Manitoba users.

You could call customer service to make sure.

Well, turns out I am being charged LD rate of 30 cents/min when I check VM. I called customer service and they forwarded it to their technical people to figure out why.
