Hi,
I recently activated a new Speakout phone (Nokia 1661) in Victoria BC. I noticed that when I press and hold "1" to access my voice mail, it dials 1604..something... to access voice mail. Does this mean that I am going to be charged long distance rates every time I check my messages? For those who don't know, 604 is the Vancouver area code.
Did the phone pick up the wrong access number somehow?

Speakout seems to be very generous when it comes to local calls. For example, calls to Toronto for me are considered local and billed @ $0.25/minute even though I'm 400km and a couple area codes away.
I'd try it out, checking the balance (*777) before and after to confirm, but it seems like it's the same with your area codes.

Victoria has a 250 area code - that means you can call anywhere in the province that has this code - i.e Okanagan, Prince George, etc for the cost of local call. As far as I know, 604 would be a long distance call - I'm assuming your area code number for the phone is 250 - right?? You need to set up a 250 area code to check your voice mail - if you search on this site, I believe there may be a post with voice mail numbers associated with area codes or someone on the site with 250 area code in Victoria can perhaps give you a number or call Customer Service

Hi I'm also in Victoria.
I just did a test with my SpeakOut phone. Mine is actually an area code 204 phone for use when I travel to Manitoba. The voice mail for that phone is saved and picked up from a Calgary number.
I checked my account balance, then phoned my SO phone from my home phone here in Victoria, left myself a voice message, then picked it up from my SpeakOut (Manitoba) phone. I then checked my account balance once more after the call. My account was charged 25 cents as a local call despite having two area code translations in the mix.
I just got a Rogers phone here in Victoria. It uses the same area code 604 numbers as SpeakOut does for voice mail. I was assured (and double checked the Rogers web site) that picking up voice mail was considered a local call. The young lady in the store I bought my phone from in fact assured me from her own experience that she had never paid long distance for her voice mail.
You could do similar test if you are still concerned. Leave yourself a message and pick it up checking your balance before and after the test calls. It will cost you 25 cents (or 45 cents) for future reference.
If you want to get your voice mail you can also dial your own number from your SO phone -- that isn't long distance from anywhere in the area served by area code 250 for SpeakOut as Okanagan suggested above. (That is how you get voice mail from most other systems like Telus, Rogers, or MTS.)
