Hi I just have a question about replacing my SIM card.
I was travelling and took out the SO SIM card so that I could use a foreign SIM. But when I return to Canada I cannot find the SO SIM anymore. Called customer service and was told that since I have lost the SIM, they cannot "kill" the old SIM and if a new SIM is issued, they cannot transfer the existing phone number over but just the account balance.
I find it a bit odd that the phone number cannot be transferred from a lost SIM to a new SIM. Anyone had experience with this and can comment?
Thanks!

Their response makes no sense. If they can transfer the phone balance then presumably
1. they know your old phone number so they should be able to transfer it to a new SIM, and,
2. if they can transfer the balance to your new SIM then the balance on the old SIM will be $0, which effectively "kills" it.

I was told by the customer support that you have to be able to prove that you own the phone number (and sim card) in order to report loss (otherwise, anyone can report loss on other's sim card), for instance, providung the information about your last refill (amount, date, etc).
Once they believe your information, you pay $25.00 (?) to purchase a new sim card, they will cancel your old sim card and transfer the credit to your new sim card.
I keep the receipts for all my refills.
You can confirm this with the customer support yourself.

boon, what you relate from SO CS makes sense but it's at odds with what the OP was told, "they cannot "kill" the old SIM and if a new SIM is issued, they cannot transfer the existing phone number over but just the account balance." That suggests that while you can't hijack someone's phone number you can hijack their account balance.
That said, your advice to keep all receipts is valid. I've also kept the original box the phone came in which has the phone serial number/IMEI as well as the original phone number I got before I ported in my old Bell number. I also have a photocopy of the numbers printed on the SIM. That should be enough to be able to prove to SO that it's my phone, my SIM and my phone number.
