lost numbers

this hasn't happened to me (yet). It's just hypothetical. If I was with Roger's and I lost my phone, they would just replace it and assign the number to a new sim. But with Speakout or Petro-Canada, I only "own" the number so long as I have the sim, right? Is there any way to register the number to my person in case of lost or stolen phone? Or am I totally misunderstanding how all this works?

Good question!

Normally you're anonymous to SO. The only way they have to verify that you own a phone number and SO account is to ask you for the PIN you use to access voicemail. That alone is a good reason to enable VM and to change the default PIN.

If you're concerned about this call SO CS and ask them how to "register" your phone number. They'll probably ask for some personal information like your name and date of birth, but that's just a guess on my part. When you find out please post their answer here so we can update the FAQ.

I'm with Petro-Mobility but I put my parents on 7-eleven so I called both.

For new Petro-Mobility customers, you need to call in to activate the phone and when you do, they ask for a 7-digit passcode. They use this to identify you as the owner of the phone number. I probably should have known this but I totally forgot about the activation (I didn't even remember the passcode I gave them).

For 7-eleven, the customer service rep said they'll ask you for the pin. I asked what happens if there is no pin and she said they can double check other ways like asking when you activated the phone, when you added money last and how much, etc. It probably is a good idea to call customer service and get them to place a pin on your account if you don't have one yet and you actually like/need your phone number.

In both cases you'll have to buy a new phone and then port the number over.
