This is the info on the new promotion...
The phone that is being offered is Nokia 2610, but NOT entirely for free... when purchased with $100 of airtime (for 365 days) you get $75 off the price of the 2610 phone. This new promotion runs from June 1st to the end of the month.
The May promotion ($100 airtime with free Nokia 1112) has been extended to the end of month as well.

According to Nokia Canada's website, a new model offered by 7-Eleven will be the Nokia 1600:

Well looks like they will soon be offering the Nokia 1600 for free on the $100 refill purchase promotion.
the 1600 is almost exactly the same as the 1112 except for the color screen. The 1600 is a little bit heavier but its battery last a an hour or two more.

I bought the Nokia 1600, yesterday ($75 - $75 = $0, w/ the purchase of $100 airtime), in anticipation of Father's Day.
I charged the phone overnight and today, June 10, when I turned it on and dialed *777 I was told that my $5 airtime expires on June 9 2008. I only turned it on and dialed *777 to see if I needed to top off the phone (in case the 99 cent 911 fees had taken effect), but found out that the phone gets auto activated either upon purchase or upon allowing the SIM to make a network connection by turning the phone on.
Anyway, I think my dad will like it...although the monthly 99 cent 911 fee (vs. 50 cents w/ Fido prepaid) and the little hidden fees I keep reading about online aren't the greatest things in the world (time is supposedly calculated from when you hit send, or from when your phone starts ringing and therefore you get charged even if you don't answer a call should it ring enough times...30 seconds?).

Used to be $10, then changed to $5.
Common to be at zero if the phone was previously sold & returned, or if someone powered it up to "test" it. Once it connects to the network (with the SIM card in), the parent company (Ztar) assumes it's been sold, and starts deducting the 911 fee each month. There's also the possibility that some weenie only wanted it for a few days, so he bought it, used up all the time, then returned it (woo-hoo, free rental!).
Give customer service a call (dial 611 from the cell, or 1-866-310-1023), and explain it to them. They should be able to reset it with no problems.
