SpeakOut Canada and SO US are two separate entities, with no roaming in each other's territory, so you'd have to get a phone/SIM/airtime in each country.
Another alternative, especially if you arrive in the US first, is to get a T-Mobile or AT&T phone/SIM/airtime. The advantage is that this will roam in Canada, albeit at somewhat higher airtime rates.
One more thing: check out GSM coverage maps for places like Alaska. There may not be much up there.
