The cheapest way is to wait until your contract is up and then call SO to port your number. Otherwise, you will be charged for the total number of months remaining on contract. Telus is famous for being brutal on early terminations. Note, do not cancel your contract before the porting is initiated or Telus will not release the number.

Thanks Olympic! Does that mean that I will not lose my Telus number (after my contract is up)? And not pay Telus any additional fees (if I port one day after the end of my contract)?
Yup, you will keep your number and it's free. Telus is supposed to cancel your service automatically after the number is successfully ported out, but don't count on it. When I ported out I was still able to call out on Telus on my number but all incoming calls were going to my SO phone. So call them just to make sure so your service is canceled once you're ported out so you don't get billed for another month by Telus.

Sorry, just need a clarification (since we are technically doing the same thing, Rogers monthly contract ends Aug 25th, switching to SO).
So on the 25th we call SO to port our numbers, then once ported call Rogers to confirm cancellation, and this will ensure we aren't charged for an extra month with Rogers, and aren't charged an ETF?
(yes, I'm slow )

Just make sure that their fine print contract and/or term of service dosen't require you to give them 30 day notice for termination (even if outside contract).
Then you can give your termination and on 25th or so day you can port your number then, so you at least use the month that you still have to pay.
