Hello, I am new here.
I am planning to switch my phone from Fido monthly plan to SO. I have a question about porting a number
I am currently on my last month with Fido and I already phoned them to cancel my phone service after 30 days. End in Dec 15, 2010.
I just called SO, they told me I need to give SO a few days ahead to port my number from Fido to SO. Did anyone here have experience like this. Does Fido charge early cancellation for just one or two days before my contract end? I don't think so but just want to be on the safe side.
thanks a lot for your time

Be careful what you tell Fido! I did my port-over and they told me that pretty much giving them 30 days notice is pointless as I'd be charged an extra month from the date of port-over. If you tell them you're cancelling and moving, they may interpret it incorrectly and flag your account for a cancellation which means your number CANNOT port the number out. My number was too important for me to save 1 month's worth of service. My last bill from Fido for some reason says they owe me money (not complaining, but waiting to see on my credit card statement).
Either way, best if SO does the initiation.

Hi,
i called fido last month and told them that i am considering a iphone and need time to do research as i heard the battery on the iphone lasts only a day.
then i called SO and asked the number be ported over, they said five days, (WOW).
that was on a Friday night or Saturday late afternoon.
on Monday i was working when the phone rang, but i was in a meeting so i could not pick it up, but i was worried that the number will be ported.
i went to call for the voice mail and i was told no service.
My number was ported over at 11.45am.
P.S. FIdo has tried to get me to pay $300 or more to cancel my account when i had three day left, i let the account go past the contract, and then moved away.
i know they are going to hit me with a charge for the month of Nov 2010, but its better than paying $50 a month for 100 minutes, free evenings and weekends.
(truth be told, i never used anytime on the phone - max usage was 6 to 15 minutes a month.)
the SO sim card works fine with a blackberry as a phone and for text messages,
I AM VERY HAPPY.
