After hearing about increasingly popular Premium-SMS scams, I'd like to know: Is there any way to block ALL premium text messages that anyone may ever send to my SO cell phone number?
This seems like a simple filter that could be easily added to a cell phone account of anyone who asks for it. It is offered by wireless companies in other countries. Not sure about Canada though. It would be good to have it available from SO.

No there is no filter. However, all incoming texts are free, so at least you wouldn't pay for them.

Actually, you would pay for them. That's how the premium-text service works. You get charged a dollar or $2 or $5 per received message, or perhaps even more for some services. Google "premium text scams".

A number of people are being scammed this way, having to pay in some cases hundreds of dollars for the premium text messages they didn't want. The typical response from the wireless company is that if you are getting these messages, it is your own fault, because you must have subscribed to them.

So I'd like to know if this service is offered by SO. I assume it is, through Rogers, and that any such premium charges would just be automatically deducted from my account. Are there any known cases of this scam happening with SO accounts?

I do not think Speakout deals with that crap. I do not think they are even set up to bill you that way. I have never heard of it in any case. Could be wrong though.

That's the thing with SpeakOut. You cannot sign up for premium texts, short codes, or anything related. SpeakOut does not offer that at all. Like I said, premium texts is not an option with Speakout, incoming or outgoing.

OK, thank you. I am happy to hear that. Just one more reason for using SpeakOut.
