I thought I had this all figured out and have found a phone I like (Rogers) but now I'm not sure what happens if I sign-up with a pre-owned phone.
I received this response from SO:
"If you are just purchasing a phone from someone you will also need to purchase a new SIM card from SpeakOut. The fee for a new SIM card is $25. Once you have purchased a voucher from your local 7-Eleven store, contact our Customer Care at 1-866-310-1023 and they will process your request. Your SIM card will be mailed to you within 7 – 10 business days and will arrive with a SpeakOut Wireless number. When you are ready to port your current number over, we recommend you contact your current provider and confirm the following information:
1) your account number
2) your password or PIN
3) your handset ESN or IMEI"
That seems very straighforward and do-able, but I see some posters have said you CAN'T purchase a stand-alone SIm, and also the prices being asked for pre-owned SIMS seem to be higher than SO is asking for new. Am I missing something? (Better to know now than after I purchase the phone!)
Wow, that might be a new policy. When they first started you could purchase just a SIM as described in that response. However, for several years now that has not been the case anymore. Their FAQ currently states "SpeakOut Wireless Service is currently available only with a handset purchase". If they're selling standalone SIMs again that would be great.

You definitely do NOT have to buy the phone to get a SIM from SpeakOut - You CAN just buy a SIM card. (This is a new service apparently and isn't updated on the website.)
They won't guarantee that it will work in all GMS phones and they won't refund the purchase if it doesn't, which is a totally fair policy as far as I'm concerned.
Cheers!

sighs can't wait to get my two cards, ordered on the 17th still not around.
and do you think these cards will come with $5 air time like the phones? , I doubt it... but it'd be nice since I used two $25 vouchers to purchase these (didn't know the price just knew I was supposed to get min $50 total in vouchers.

Any details on this? I know I can get a new sim card when the old one is expired for $25 from speakout, but never heard of getting a new one. In any case, it is a welcome development if true. What do they cost?
Bridonca can you please clarify this?
"when the old one is expired"
I did not know that my SIM card would expire.
I thought I could simply top it up for as long as I wanted after the initial minutes were used up. Are you saying all Speakout customers must scurry to buy a new SIM card afer x number of months?

SOmark: What iamdrumming said. Sorry for the confusion.
I meant to say there used to be only 2 ways to get a $25 SIM from Speakout, if your old SIM card was no longer active because you let the account expire, or if your phone got lost or stolen. That you can now just order a SIM from 7-11 is a welcome development. It would be nice if 7-11 carried Speakout SIMs in their inventory, hopefully sooner than later.
SOmark: I am sorry for the confusion. I meant to say you cannot reactivate old Speakout SIM cards, so once you let the account expire, you would have to pay $25 to get a new SIM. If you lost your phone or it was stolen, Speakout could deactivate the lost or stolen sim, and mail you a new SIM for $25.

Thanks Iam and Bri for the clarification!
Yes it will be nice when 7-11 stocks the SIM's at their stores.
I'm in a tricky position now because I need another SIM but don't want to wait 2-3 weeks to order one at a 7-11.

Not so fast...
I asked the question about buying only a SIM and received the following answer:

No unfortunately our provider will contractually not permit us to sell a
sim only product.

Maybe but I've tried asking at a couple of stores here in Calgary and they claim not to know anything about selling just SIM's either.
Then again most of the folks working at 7-11 stores are not exactly technically oriented (or interested) so it's likely beyond expectations to get an answer from anyone but the operator.
I dunno but it's looking like one buys used or bites the bullet and pays for a handset that will never be used.

You don't buy the SIM from the store - Trust me, the clerks won't know anything about it.
Just purchase a $25 card and then call SpeakOut and they'll send the SIM. Mine arrived in less than a a week and, yes, it does have $5.00 already on it.
The SpeakOut CS reps are amazingly hospitable (And I REALLY enjoyed telling Virgin to stuff their bad service because I am now singing Speak Out's praises on Facebook LOL!)

If I am not currently a speakout wireless customer and have never purchased a phone from 7-11 before. Can I just go to a store, buy a voucher, and call customer service to have them deduct the cost ($25) from the voucher and have the SIM card mailed directly to my address? Can I pick my area code (613) or will I have to change it later when it arrives at my house? Will they be able to mail it to an Ottawa residence? I'm currently living in Ottawa (where there are no 7-11s anymore) and I'm going on a trip to Toronto (where there are 7-11s) then I'm coming back. I want to buy the SIM card and use it in a phone from Rogers.
Basically, my one big question is whether or not you can order a SIM card with a voucher from 7-11 without having bought a phone from them?
Please reply ASAP if you can.

Sorry andy123 - I don't have your answer but I do have the identical questions (sim card) (area code selection) and (using a rogers phone). Also it seems you would need to buy a $50 dollar voucher (vs $25 - due to taxes)?
I see you haven't got a reply...but i'm very interested as well - good luck

I visited two stores last week and asked both if I could still take advantage of the $100 free phone & sim offer. Both said the only promo that was active was the $20 w/ $50 purchase. So I proceeded to ask if I bought a $25 voucher, could I order a sim card... I was advised by both stores that only replacement sims to current customers could be ordered by calling SpeakOut CS.
On both counts I don't understand the theory behind the policy.
Anytime someone is willing to spend $100 on the SO service, the free phone enables more customers to a) visit 7/eleven stores to buy credit or b) use SO minutes and buy more credit.
Selling a sim only option would offer the two stated benefits above. Many people these days have unlocked phones for occasional or emergency use.
I ended up buying a sim from a 3rd party and adding credit and the sim to an unlocked phone I already have. The strange thing is, the sim reads Rogers on the top of the phone screen. I activated it myself, w/ a Vancouver store code, added credit and have activated voice mail. Has anyone had a SO sim activated show up in phone as on Rogers service?
Vancouver, BC.
