All went smoothly - asked about SIM only - the cashier said you have to buy a phone (not surprised), just asked for a $25 voucher. Called customer service and asked for a SIM - he wanted to ensure I knew my phone was supported and clarified that I wanted Speakout (I guess PetroCan is also available). Took down my contact details and the voucher numbers - SIM will be mailed.

Basically, my one big question is whether or not you can order a SIM card with a voucher from 7-11 without having bought a phone from them?
Please reply ASAP if you can.
Yes, you can. I bought a $25 voucher at 7-Eleven, called SpeakOut to order a SIM. It arrived in four days. I put it in my Rogers phone and it worked perfectly. SIM arrives with $5 worth of time.) I was not a SpeakOut cutstomer prior to ordering the SIM.

Hi all, first post here from a long time lurker!
First of all, I have gained a lot of great info from these forums already, so thanks to everyone who contributes.
I joined up today so that I could add something to this thread.. I took the advice given here & went to 7-eleven this morning where I got a $25 voucher. I called Customer Service and they are sending out a sim within '10 working days'. I had no issues and I gotta say that a lot of the other 'big' wireless providers could learn a lot from Speakout's service skills, they really were good.
Anyway, the only question that was even remotely awkward was when she pushed me a little for my 'existing' Speakout number, I said I couldn't remember and she moved on from there. I have to call back to activate the sim when it arrives.
I hope this post is useful and gives a little more evidence/hope to anyone hoping to purchase a sim-only in this way.

...I don't understand the theory behind the policy.
Allow me to explain. First, a little background.
SpeakOut operates on the Rogers network. Now, Rogers is a big company dedicated to maximizing profit. As such, they tolerate MVNOs like Speakout for two reasons: (1) SO serves the extreme low end of the market by selling to penny-pinching tightwads. Rogers doesn't want to dabble in that market. (2) By allowing MVNOs on their network, they can claim that they're "fostering competition" when the CRTC asks.
Part of SpeakOut's legal agreement with Rogers says that they won't poach Rogers customers. That means no selling SIMs (because the only person likely to buy a SpeakOut SIM in Canada is a disgruntled Fido or Rogers victim). You'll also notice that SO's advertising emphasizes long expiry times and freedom from contracts. At no point do they say, "We're a hell of a lot cheaper than Rogers and we're running on the same damn network -- so switch and save a fortune."

Yea I live in Ottawa so no 7/11 stores!! So I have to buy airtime whenever I can.
Is it possible to buy a $50 voucher from them and buy a $25 SIM and then with the $25 left over, I could get airtime? Has anyone done this? Or am I safer just buying 2 or 3 $25 vouchers?
One more quesetion: does anyone here have the $10, 2500 text add-on? If so how is it?
Thanks in advance!

I have the texting package, not sure what you mean "how is it?". If someone tries to send an MMS (which sometimes happens if people are long winded, their phone will convert an SMS to an MMS) it will not arrive, I get nothing at all. Other than that it is great. I especially appreciate that there is a countdown counter on the website that says how many texts you have used since the package was renewed.

Yea I think I will get it because it's only $10 a month...best that's out there. Petro-Canada has $20 a month with 2500 texts but you get 50 minutes. Thanks for the replies though!

Does the SpeakOut SIM card that I order through the phone come with a quick start guide that has a 7-digit activation code and 5-digit Store # so you can place that SIM card into a Rogers phone and activate a new phone number?
What I want to do is go to 7-Eleven and buy a phone and a $50 voucher. Then I will activate the phone (that I bought) online and use the $50 voucher to order a SIM card. When the SIM card arrives, can I put it into my Rogers phone and use it to activate an account with a different phone number? (that's why I'm wondering whether the SIM card comes with a 7-digit activation code and 5-digit Store #) I will then use the amount left over on my voucher to add airtime to my Rogers phone with the Speakout SIM card. I will top up my other phone later. Therefore I will end up with 2 different phones (one from Speakout and one from Rogers) that have 2 different phone numbers.
Please reply soon.

Just to update, the sim I ordered last Sunday just arrived. I slipped it straight into an unlocked BlackBerry Torch and it worked first time. Have tried texting & receiving/placing a call, everything worked and no need to call Speakout for activation. Got a welcome message before my first call placed.
For those who were wondering, my carrier onscreen shows as "SpeakOut" not Rogers.
Very pleased, I am considering using SpeakOut as my regular service and not just backup!
