Yeah, it is a rather poor deal. I have no idea about the tax, but I would assume they charge it.

The tax was already paid on your SO balance when you purchased the airtime voucher.

I'm still getting familiar with all of these new terms.
But in my mind, a SIM card though related to air-time is distinct from it.

If you later buy a replacement SIM card, what does that have to do with any air-time you may have purchased previously?

Replacement SIM cards don't need to come with any air-time correct?

Airtime just means the balance in your account, be it $1.00 or $100. If you need a replacement sim, then SpeakOut will deduct $25 from your account. Taken from the official site:

"SIM Card Replacements
Your SpeakOut phone comes with an installed SIM card. A $25.00 fee will apply for SIM Card Replacements. This amount will be debited from your SpeakOut Wireless account. If your account does not have the required funds you will be required to top up your account before a replacement SIM card can be shipped to you."

Since you are new, I encourage you to read the home/faq page of this site, and especially the official site. Both have great information. Also, the search button will come in useful as well.

I am pretty sure that if you lose your SIM card, you also lose any airtime that you purchased for it. IOW, airtime is VERY connected to your SIM card. Remember, they have NO idea who you are, a person's name isn't involved at all in the SO system, they have no idea who you are except by using your phone with your SO SIM, and if that's dead/gone...

I'm sure you can see the problem here if you lose/damage a SIM card with outstanding airtime: $25 is the minimum amount it's going to cost you to get a new SIM. If you had $20 of airtime left, the smallest amount you can buy is $25 worth so that you have enough in your airtime account to buy a new SIM. Whether they transfer the "leftover" $20 of airtime with your new SIM isn't mentioned in the FAQs. Somewhere in the FAQ they inferred that airtime on a lost SIM is essentially sayonara...but I don't know if that is really true, I'm pretty sure they have a way to do something they just don't want to talk about to minimize fraud.

Thanks IAD.

There is confusion because of what was stated before me and how I responded to it.

"The tax was already paid on your SO balance when you purchased the airtime voucher."

This was in response to discussion about a SIM card replacement.
So this fellow was talking about tax on an airtime voucher, which to my mind has nothing at all to do with a subsequent SIM card purchase (and possible tax on that SIM card).

Correct me if I'm wrong with my thinking.

I assume by your user PIN#. They always request it along with my phone number when I call.
