Well, if the Kawarthas you're talking about is in this map:
Kawarthas.net map (2MB)
then the Rogers coverage map from PetroCan:
PetroCan coverage (7MB)
and the Speakout Canada brochure:
Speakout brochure (1.5MB)
both show the area is pretty well covered, but gets a bit spotty north of Haliburton (zoom in to see). Red is the full Rogers footprint, which as far as we know, 7-11 and Petro get to use. It's only Fido customers who get stuck with the original Fido footprint, unless they pay more to big-daddy Rogers. The only Fido yellow I can see on the map is in BC and Alberta.

One of the things I am most thankful for about this site is this info on now having access to the full Rogers Network. When I got the phone last fall I was not able to use the phone beyond a certain distance from Toronto. On the weekend I checked it in areas I was previously not able to get a signal and it worked! I did have some signal problems and a dropped call (in a valley) but this is very normal for rural areas. I also have a Telus phone and it also has problems in this same area even though they tell me that there is "full digital coverage". Certainly while things look great on the map you will find that in reality you may still have problems.

I arrived in Tofino B.C. yesterday, and find that my Nokia 1112 does not make a connection. Called customer service (on my husband's Rogers phone), and the fellow said that it is the phone, as they do use the Rogers system. I guess some phones are weaker than others, and the 1112 may not be strong enough. Has anybody else with the 1112 had this problem of not being able to access the system perhaps due to the phone?
Incidentally, it is the same Customer Service reps as for Petro Canada.

Try Menu, Settings, Phone settings, Network selection, Manual. The phone will scan for a few seconds, looking for available networks; see what it comes up with, if anything. Put it back to Automatic when you're done, if you like.
Unlike my old Siemens A56, the 1112 doesn't have a built-in list that I can scroll through to manually set any of hundreds of networks as my "Home" network. It'll just scan for the one network programmed into the SIM card... 302 720 (Rogers), with some added bits to identify itself as only using the Speakout service.
Did you try swapping SIM cards between your two phones to see if it really is the phone, or just the Speakout service that's not connecting?

I was unable to get a speakout signal in Wasaga Beach with my Speakout Nokia 1112. My friend had a Rogers PayGo Nokia 2610 and was getting a full strength signal.
I tried the Manual network selection - no success.
I will advise once I have: a) contacted Customer Service and b) tried swapping SIM cards with friends phone.

According to another forum. You can find out if you are on the rogers network or original Fido by entering *#123# on you phone and hitting send.
*rogers monthly- it says "No Tariff"
*fido monthly - it says "Fido Network"
*rogers pays as you go - havent tried yet
*fido prepaid - havent tried yet
**my speakout - it says "No Tariff"

Thanks for your suggestions, Gopher Guts.
Am now back in Ontario, from the trip to B.C. Nothing worked until I got back to Victoria and Vancouver -- I had no signal at all in Torfino, Ucluelet, and Campbell River (which have Rogers, but not old Fido coverage). I phoned 611 again a few minutes ago, and the agent looked it up and said that for some reason I had the old coverage, and she has now fixed it, so I will have full coverage. I will be heading up to Lindsay and Peterborough next month, so will find out if she's right.

I live in Wasaga Beach. I have a Petro-Canada (same service provider as Speakout) 1112 and it works fine.
Very interesting...
I put my Speakout SIM card into a friends Rogers Paygo Nokia 2610 and could not pick up a signal. With my friends Rogers Paygo SIM card in my Speakout Nokia 1112 I was able to get a full strength signal.
Conclusion: Speakout coverage is NOT the same as Rogers.

Hey SpeakOut_User, did you call 611 as was suggested before. They will correct your coverage issue for you.
BTW -- I bought the deal in Edmonton at the end of May and got a 2610. Coverage is great, been through much of Alberta and Saskatchewan without any problems. They had the other Nokia (the flip phone not the 1112) too.

Thanks speakoutthetruth. Customer service has "updated" my plan and advises that I should experience improved coverage. I will find out how this works out when travelling into areas where I previously had no service.
CS was very helpful, polite, and prompt about this.
Prior to the Rogers SIM swap experiment, I had called CS about the issue and all I got was acknowledgement that coverage was limited. So, to anyone not getting CS results - try, try again.

Hi, I just called 611 to "update" my network because I was having severe coverage limitations. The woman "updated" it without too much trouble. She said that when they updated the coverage, all the old phones were in the "grandfather" program instead of the "star" program (the star name might be a little different, but doesn't change the story!). Now I don't know why they wouldn't do a mass changeover of all phone numbers issued before the startup of the new coverage, but if your number is more than 6 mos old or so, and you're experiencing coverage problems, call. They took down my info and called me back. Don't expect too quick a response. They say that a standard call-back time is 3 days. Otherwise though, excellent customer service, and they rememdied the situation right away.
Thanks to whoever found out about the "fix" first! Would have suffered with crappy coverage indefinitely :o)
