Hi! To make a long, sad story short, Rogers technical staff fried my 3 year old Siemens phone with a switch they sent to reset my settings. My phone had been working great for calls and texts, I had just changed some settings and was unable to get on the internet. Now it won't even turn on. So I need a new phone and they refuse to send me one, even though they wrecked it. I tested my SIM card (with a balance of over $50) on my husband's Rogers phone and it is still working. If I buy a SO phone, can I put my Rogers SIM card in it and use up the balance? I know I can't web browse with SO, I just need a basic phone for emergencies. I was paying $100 a year with Rogers (at .40 a minute) and thought it was a great deal. I found your website in my research and can't believe the prices. I am hoping to find a $74 off deal in London or Chatham, Ontario. I appreciate the site and any help that you can give me.

Fortunately Speakout phones will work with your Rogers SIM, so there's no problem using it.
However, if you plan on buying a $100 top-up card to get a free SIM and phone, you'll have to activate the card (and the Speakout service of course) sooner rather than later since the $100 card will expire in 3 months. Of course, you can activate it, add $100 to your Speakout account, take out the Speakout SIM card and leave it in a drawer, and take it out and start using it when you finish with your Rogers card. Speakout will charge you around $1/month, but you'll still be ahead because of the free phone.

You can also buy replacement phones from places like FactoryDirect and TigerDirect for as little as $20 in case you need a spare. As long as they are unlocked GSM and operate on the 850/1900 Mhz bands they'll work fine with both Rogers and SO SIMs. You could then use up your airtime on Rogers, buy a SO SIM from someone on this site and SO airtime when you need it. Depending on what phone you buy and how much airtime you intend to use that may be a better option.

Thank you both very much for your help. I would like to warn anyone dealing with Rogers. They are happy to take your money, but when you have a problem they are no help whatsoever. Between customer service and technical support, I was shuffled to at least 13 different people. Most of them chuckled that my 3 YEAR OLD!!! phone was still working. Some claimed that I must have bought it in the states, they had no service manual for it, the battery must be dead, the SIM card must be dead, etc. Rogers sent me the phone (I think I paid about $50 for it) when they went to GSM. I realize now that it must have been an older model when I got it, but it worked fine until they zapped it. I have written a letter to their head office and am waiting for the UPS guy to drive up with a replacement. HA! (Geeze, I hope I don't sound TOO BITTER!!!) Thanks again for all the information.
