I've had a basic speakout phone for a year or so and the price and usage is perfect for me, but I hate the phone. I text as well and I can't take the crappy phone keyboard anymore.

How do I go about getting a phone with a proper keyboard to work - can I just stick my SIM card into a "real" phone? Will any phone work? Just a regular phone with a qwerty keyboard? Basically, what do I need to look for?

Also - are their perils with getting a used phone? Do they crap out or do people just outgrow them?

Also - does SO support things like sending/receiving pictures with your message or do you need to get the browsing thing as well?

Does my phone need to have wireless capability? I know some do and some don't but I don't know what difference it makes...

Thanks - I've looked around a bit here but I'm basically clueless.

Pretty much any unlocked GSM phone that works in North America or any Rogers phone willwork with Speak out. Rogers phones are pre-configured to just work, so they have a slight advantage. I am not quite sure what you mean when you say wireless capability. If all you are doing is sending and receiving SMS text messages, practically all phones can do that. If you see a phone you like, ask us about it, and we will tell you what we think of it.

As for buying a used phone, try to avoid phones that have a hinge, because they tend not to be as durable. Blackberry's with roller balls do not to age well either. Stay away from old iphones, because the old battery is not easy to change, which makes for an expensive repair.

Thanks for the info - I don't know what "wireless" is for on a phone - I just saw that on some phones it was wireless enabled and some not.

If a phone is wirelees enabled then it can connect to the internet through a wireless network, sometimes called Wi-Fi.
