So I got the $100 free phone deal (in Vancouver) and everything works great. $105 calling credit, expires in 1 year. I've had the phone for 2 days now and so far I got 2 calls from unsolicited sources. The first one is apparently is from a company trying to sell credit cards 888-882-3811. I did not answer, and I added it to my list of screened numbers. Then I got another call last night from a local number 604-520-4253 which I looked up to be the Royal Columbian Hospital, which is close by and is currently running a fund raising lottery. I did not answer and also added that to my screened numbers. Please tell me this is not the beginning of the avalanche.

Hmmm I wonder if anyone else had the same problem. I got mine last week and I havent gotten any unsolicited calls yet but maybe because I ported my number from Fido. That would suck if built in speakout phone numbers are given out/sold to marketers...

Not all call centers go by what's in the phone book. They'll have sequential lists to make sure they cover every number.
604-520-4253 is listed as RCH's Main Switchboard, so it could have been just a mis-dialed number by a worker or patient/relative. It does happen, even on land-lines!
You could fill up your phone memory with "screened" numbers and still get random calls. Just like my home phone, I ignore them if they're not from a number I recognise. If they leave a voicemail (telemarketers usually don't, family will), the phone will tell me and I can check it later.
You think a couple of random calls is bad? When I moved into my current place in Aug/02, I got a new land-line number. By June/03 I had received 271 calls from assorted fax machines and other sources, at all hours of the day & night. It took a bit of online searching to find my "new" number was an old fax number from an industrial manufacturer that had been out of business for 3 years.

I'm now at wrong number #5. BC Health 604-864-3400, 888-882-3811 again, and Bank of Nova Scotia 604-853-3252. Good grief 5 calls in 2.5 days. I searched all that I could online but couldn't find my number posted or listed as someone else. I think that I am going to start answering the calls because I now have the feeling this cell phone number belonged to someone else, and banks and the healthcare system are trying to track them down. Hopefully I can get removed from some lists. My fear that 7-11 is passing these numbers on to telemarketers is pretty but gone.

You can try calling them on a landline (no airtime charges) and see what's up, or if it gets to be too much, see if Customer Service can give you a new number.
Under Menu, Call log, Call timers, Duration of all calls, does the number look normal, or is there a lot of time that you can't account for (pre-used phone)?

The call log looks normal. I'm going to start calling the numbers on a land line tonight. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, this 888-882-3811/unknown-name calls my cellular telephone in Ontario,
Canada a couple of times per week from May to August 2007.
Upon returning the call from a land-line, it was Bank of Nova Scotia
Credit Card telemarketing office prompting to "enter a 5-digit number of the
person that you wish to talk to".
The next step is to call Scotia Bank to remove my cell # from their records
(or replace with a new/fake #) or to call Telus to change my cell #...
