Using a Rogers Network Phone in the States w/ SO US sim card?

Hello, this is a great site! I have been reading the FAQs and the guide but please forgive me if this question has been answered as I haven't found it.

I would like to use a Speak Out U.S. sim card on my locked Fido phone (which uses the rogers network). Is this possible?

From the sim guide I've found that i can use a speak out sim card on a locked rogers phone, but i don't know if that also applies to a speak out sim card purchased in the states.

Thanks very much.

A SpeakOut USA sim will not work in a phone that's locked to Fido. A SpeakOut Canada sim will also NOT work in your locked Fido phone.

Hi there. Thanks!

So in the guide on this site, I found this:

If you don't like any of the phones that Speak Out sells, then you'll have to do 2 things:
1. Buy a SIM card from someone on this forum or buy a SIM card and phone from 7-Eleven and just use the SIM card (you can then sell the phone that came with the purchase).
2. Buy a GSM phone that will work with a Speak Out SIM (either an unlocked GSM phone that uses the 850MHz and/or 1900MHz bands or one that is locked to Rogers). Then place the SIM card into that phone.

So in point two, they mean the phone must be literally locked to rogers the provider? And not the rogers network?

Correct. A Rogers branded phone that's locked to Rogers will work, however a locked Fido branded phone (even though it uses the Rogers network) will not work with a SpeakOut sim inside. The phone is locked to the provider.

Iamdrumming, you are the best.

Thanks very much for this info. So I can use a locked rogers phone. Now, last question. The locked rogers phone will accept an american speakout sim card?

Again, thanks for all you help.

No. A locked Rogers phone is locked to the Rogers network. It happens that SO Canada uses the Rogers network so that will work as well. SO US uses the AT&T network. A SIM for any other carrier, including Fido as stated above, will not.

For maximum flexibility get an unlocked dualband (850/1900) GSM phone. If you intend to use it overseas, get an unlocked quadband GSM phone.
